What is Depth Cycling?

Depth cycling is a method of growing seaweed that enables year round offshore cultivation. It utilizes submersible platforms that are diurnally moved through the water column to optimize growth and nutrient absorption.

At Night: Nutrient Uptake

  • Platforms are lowered to deeper, nutrient-rich waters.

  • Seaweed absorbs essential nutrients (nitrates, phosphates) scarce in surface waters.

  • Crucial in stratified (layered) ocean conditions.

During the Day: Photosynthesis

  • Platforms are raised to the surface (epipelagic zone).

  • Seaweed accesses ample sunlight for photosynthesis.

  • Absorbs CO2 from upper water layers and atmosphere.

This method is designed for high energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Motors run briefly (e.g., ~20 mins twice daily) to adjust platform depth, unlike continuous pumping or upwelling in systems.
