What is Depth Cycling?
Depth cycling is a method of growing seaweed that enables year round offshore cultivation. It utilizes submersible platforms that are diurnally moved through the water column to optimize growth and nutrient absorption.
At Night: Nutrient Uptake
Platforms are lowered to deeper, nutrient-rich waters.
Seaweed absorbs essential nutrients (nitrates, phosphates) scarce in surface waters.
Crucial in stratified (layered) ocean conditions.
During the Day: Photosynthesis
Platforms are raised to the surface (epipelagic zone).
Seaweed accesses ample sunlight for photosynthesis.
Absorbs CO2 from upper water layers and atmosphere.
This method is designed for high energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Motors run briefly (e.g., ~20 mins twice daily) to adjust platform depth, unlike continuous pumping or upwelling in systems.
